Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is a type of private health insurance designed to cover out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, co-payments, and coinsurance.

Medigap supplements Original Medicare by filling in coverage gaps, whereas Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. While Medigap works alongside Parts A and B, Medicare Advantage plans typically bundle Medicare Parts A, B, and often D (prescription drug coverage) into one plan, sometimes may offer additional benefits.

The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which lasts for six months and starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurance companies can't use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept your application or determine the premium rate.

Yes, you can switch Medigap plans. However, unless you're in a specific guaranteed issue right period or within your initial open enrollment period, you may be subject to medical underwriting, which can affect your premium or eligibility based on health status.

As of January 1, 2006, Medigap policies sold to new beneficiaries no longer offer prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, consider enrolling in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

Most states standardize Medigap policies by letter, meaning Plan G in Texas offers the same benefits as Plan G in Florida. However, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize their plans differently.
